Milling Machines

A milling machine is a machine tool that mills a workpiece with a milling cutter. In addition to milling planes, grooves, gear teeth, threads and spline shafts, milling machines can also process more complex profiles, which is more efficient than planing machines, and is widely used in machinery manufacturing and repair departments.

Definitions and materials

Milling machine mainly refers to a machine tool that uses a milling cutter to process various surfaces of a workpiece. Generally, the milling cutter is mainly based on rotary motion, and the movement of the workpiece and milling cutter is the feed motion. It can process planes, grooves, and various curved surfaces and gears.

Milling machine is a widely used machine tool. It can process planes (horizontal planes, vertical planes), grooves (key grooves, T-slots, dovetail grooves, etc.), split tooth parts (gears, spline shafts, sprockets), Spiral surface (thread, spiral groove) and various curved surfaces. In addition, it can also be used to process the surface and inner hole of the rotating body and cut the work. When the milling machine is working, the workpiece is mounted on the worktable or the indexing head and other accessories. The milling cutter rotates as the main movement and is supplemented by the feed motion of the worktable or the milling head. The workpiece can obtain the required machining surface. Due to the multi-edge intermittent cutting, the productivity of the milling machine is high. In simple terms, a milling machine is a machine that can mill, drill and boring a workpiece.

Classification

Distinguish according to layout form and scope of application
1. Lifting table milling machine: universal, horizontal and vertical, etc., mainly used for processing small and medium parts, the most widely used.
2. Gantry milling machines: Including gantry milling and boring machines, gantry milling machines and double-column milling machines, all are used to process large parts.
3. Single-column milling machine and single-arm milling machine: the horizontal milling head of the former can be moved along the column guide, and the table is fed longitudinally; the vertical milling head of the latter can be moved horizontally along the cantilever guide, and the cantilever can also be adjusted along the column guide. Both are used for machining large parts.
4. Worktable non-lifting milling machine: There are two types of rectangular and circular worktables. It is a medium-sized milling machine between the lifting table milling machine and the gantry milling machine. Its vertical movement is completed by lifting the milling head on the column.
5. Instrument milling machine: A small milling machine for lifting tables, used for processing instruments and other small parts.
6. Tool milling machine: used for mold and tool manufacturing, equipped with a variety of accessories such as end milling heads, universal angle tables and plugs, and can also perform drilling, boring and plunging.
7. Other milling machines: such as keyway milling machines, cam milling machines, crankshaft milling machines, roll journal milling machines and square steel ingot milling machines, etc., are special milling machines manufactured for processing corresponding workpieces.

By structure
(1) Desktop milling machine: a small milling machine for milling small parts such as instruments and meters.
(2) Cantilever type milling machine: a milling machine with a milling head mounted on a cantilever, the bed is horizontally arranged, the cantilever can generally move vertically along the column guide on one side of the bed, and the milling head moves along the cantilever guide.
(3) Ram type milling machine: Milling machine with spindle mounted on the ram.
(4) Gantry type milling machine: The bed is horizontally arranged, and the columns on both sides and the connecting beams form the milling machine of the portal frame. The milling head is mounted on the beam and column and can be moved along its guide. Generally, the beam can be moved vertically along the column guide rail, and the table can be moved longitudinally along the bed rail for large-scale processing.
(5) Flat milling machine: Milling machine for milling plane and forming surface.
(6) Copying milling machine: Milling machine for copying workpieces. Generally used for machining complex shaped workpieces.
(7) Lifting table milling machine: A milling machine with a lifting table that can move vertically along the guide rail of the bed. The worktable and slide saddle usually installed on the lifting table can be moved longitudinally and laterally, respectively.
(8) Rocker milling machine: Rocker milling machine can also be referred to as turret milling machine, rocker milling, universal milling, turret milling machine of the machine tool is a lightweight general metal cutting machine with vertical and horizontal milling functions, can be used in milling, Flat parts, bevels, grooves and splines of small parts.
(9) Bed-type milling machine: The table cannot be raised and lowered, and can be moved longitudinally and laterally along the bed rail, and the milling head or column can be vertically moved.
(10) Dedicated milling machines: for example, tool milling machines: milling machines used for milling tool molds, with high machining accuracy and complex machining shapes.

Divided by control method
Milling machines can be divided into copy milling machines, program-controlled milling machines and CNC milling machines.

Function and characteristics

1.Point control function
This function can realize the processing of hole series with high requirements on mutual position accuracy.
2.Continuous contour control function
This function can realize linear and circular interpolation function and non-circular curve processing.
3. Tool radius compensation function
This function can be programmed according to the dimension of the part drawing without having to consider the actual radius size of the tool used, thereby reducing the editing
Complex numerical calculations during the process.
4. Tool length compensation function
This function can automatically compensate the length of the tool to meet the requirements of tool length adjustment during processing.
5.Proportion and mirror processing function
The proportional function can execute the programmed machining program to change the coordinate value according to the specified proportion. Mirror processing is also called axisymmetric processing. If the shape of a part is symmetrical about the coordinate axis, as long as a program of one or two quadrants is programmed, the contours of the other quadrants can be realized by mirror processing.
6.Rotate function
This function can execute the programmed machining program by rotating it at any angle in the machining plane.
7, subroutine call function
Some parts need to be repeatedly processed with the same contour shape at different positions. Using this contour shape processing program as a subroutine and repeatedly calling it at the required position, the part can be processed.
8. Macro program function
This function can use a total instruction to represent a series of instructions to achieve a certain function, and can operate on variables, making the program more flexible and convenient.
