Definition

Welding transformer is a double winding transformer. In order to adjust the arc ignition voltage, the primary winding is equipped with a tap changer, and a tap switch is used to adjust the no-load voltage of the secondary side. The primary and secondary windings are separately installed on two iron core posts, so that the transformer itself has a large leakage reactance, so the terminal voltage of the secondary side will decrease sharply with the increase of the current. An iron core reactor is connected in series in the secondary winding circuit for adjusting the welding current. By changing the length of the air gap in the reactor, the current will increase as the air gap increases.

Function and role

1. Easy arc starting
During arc initiation, the electrode is in contact with the workpiece. Rust and impurities on the electrode tip and the surface of the workpiece. Causes poor contact. The contact resistance is large, and a high no-load voltage is required to break down the high-resistance contact surface; furthermore, the air changes from a non-conductive state to a conductive state. Both the ionization of gas and the emission of electrons require a certain amount of electric field energy. If the no-load voltage is too low. The electron emission capability is too weak. The gas cannot be fully ionized and an arc cannot be established. Therefore, if there is a high enough no-load voltage, it is easy to bow I arc.

2.Ensures stable arc combustion
The higher the no-load voltage, the more favorable it is for AC arc continuous combustion. However, the no-load voltage is high, material-consuming and unsafe, so the no-load voltage should be appropriate.

3.Ensure the stability of welding specification parameters
During manual arc welding, the welder’s hands tremble or the workpiece is uneven. The arc length often changes. When the arc length is changed, the arc static characteristic curve is shifted up and down, so that the “power-arc” system will change the ignition when it is stable, and the arc length increases. If the welding transformer has a steep external characteristic, then when the arc length changes, the welding current does not change much. During the welding process, if the welding current does not change much, the welding quality can be guaranteed.

4.The short-circuit current should not be too large
Short circuits often occur when the arc is ignited and the electrode metal is fused into the weld. If the short-circuit current is too large. The welding machine will be overloaded and there is a danger of burnout. In addition, the excessive current causes the electrode to overheat, the coating is melted, and the spatter of the droplet is increased. However, if the current of the short circuit is not large enough, it will also make the transition of the arc starting and electrode metal droplet difficult.

Principle

The primary winding transfers power to the core. It is an alternating magnetic field generated in the iron core. The core then transfers the magnetic energy to the secondary winding. Make the secondary winding induce electromotive force. This is the basic working principle of the transformer.
