Function and benefits

The most basic requirements for electrodes reaching into the combustion chamber are ablation resistance (electrical and chemical corrosion) and good thermal conductivity. With the development of materials science and technology, electrode materials have undergone the evolution of iron, nickel, nickel-based alloys, nickel-copper composites, and precious metals. The most common use today is nickel-based alloys. Generally, pure metals have better thermal conductivity than alloys, but pure metals (such as nickel) are more sensitive to chemical corrosion reactions to combustion gases and the solid deposits they form than alloys. Therefore, the electrode material uses nickel-based elements such as chromium, manganese, and silicon. Chromium improves the resistance to electrical corrosion, and manganese and silicon improve the resistance to chemical corrosion, especially the corrosion resistance of the highly hazardous sulfur oxide.

Under the action of high voltage, the air between the center electrode and the side electrode of the spark plug will rapidly ionize, forming positively charged ions and negatively charged free electrons. When the voltage between the electrodes reaches a certain value, the number of ions and electrons in the gas is increased like an avalanche, so that the air loses insulation, and the gap forms a discharge channel, and a “breakdown” phenomenon occurs. At this time, the gas forms a luminous body, that is, “spark”. With its thermal expansion, a “snap” sound also occurs. The temperature of this electric spark can be as high as 2000-3000 ° C, which is enough to ignite the mixture in the combustion chamber of the cylinder.
