Function and role

1) DC blocking characteristics
Capacitors cannot allow direct current to flow. This is one of the important characteristics of capacitors. This characteristic is called the capacitor’s DC blocking characteristics.

2) Communication characteristics
Capacitors have the characteristic of passing alternating current, which is called the capacitor’s communication characteristics.

3) Characteristics of through-pass and energy storage
In theory, a capacitor does not consume energy, and the charge charged in the capacitor will only be stored in the capacitor. As long as there is no condition in the external circuit to discharge the capacitor, the charge will always be stored in the capacitor. This characteristic of the capacitor is called Energy storage characteristics.
Straight-through characteristics are the superposition of DC-blocking characteristics and through characteristics of capacitors. Capacitors in DC circuits have the same current and voltage directions. After the capacitors are fully charged, no current flows in the circuit. Therefore, capacitors are considered to have a DC blocking effect. Capacitors are often connected through blocking, that is, capacitors have the function of blocking blocking.

4) Capacitive reactance
Although the function of the capacitor is to pass AC and block DC, in the AC circuit, the capacitor still has a certain effect that hinders the flow of AC current. This hindrance effect is inversely proportional to the capacitor’s capacitance. The smaller the capacitance, the more the obstruction effect. The larger the capacitance is, the smaller the blocking effect is.

Classification

Ceramic capacitors are made of high-dielectric constant capacitor ceramics (barium titanate-titanium oxide) extruded into round tubes, wafers, or discs as a medium, and silver is plated on the ceramics as an electrode by the infiltration method. It is divided into two types of high-frequency porcelain and low-frequency porcelain.

High-frequency ceramic capacitors are suitable for high-frequency circuits of radio and electronic equipment. Capacitors with a small positive capacitance temperature coefficient are used in highly stable oscillation circuits as circuit capacitors and pad capacitors. Low-frequency ceramic dielectric capacitors are limited to bypass or DC blocking in circuits with low operating frequencies, or are used in places with low requirements for stability and loss (including high frequencies). They should not be used in pulse circuits. Because they are easily broken down by pulse voltage. Common ceramic dielectric capacitors include through-core or pillar-type ceramic dielectric capacitors. One of its electrodes is a mounting screw.

Monolithic capacitors are multilayer ceramic capacitors. Their structure is to cover a number of ceramic film blanks with electrode paddle materials. After being superimposed, they are wound into an indivisible whole at one time, and the outside is encapsulated with resin. New type capacitors with large volume, high capacity, high reliability and high temperature resistance; low-frequency monolithic capacitors with high dielectric constant also have stable performance and are small in size.

Mica capacitor
In terms of structure, mica capacitors can be divided into foil type and silver type. The silver electrode is formed by plating a silver layer directly on the mica sheet by vacuum evaporation method or infiltration method. Because the air gap is eliminated, the temperature coefficient is greatly reduced, and the capacitance stability is higher than that of the foil type. Mica capacitors are widely used in high-frequency appliances and can be used as standard capacitors.
